The City of Rancho Palos Verdes has closed the beach and tide pool area located at Portuguese Point in Abalone Cove Shoreline Park for public safety due to falling rocks and unstable cliffs above.

The closure will remain in place until further notice.

The 64-acre Reserve contains a State Ecological Preserve with important natural marine resources and the bottom of the Portuguese Bend landslide area.Two promontories, Portuguese and Inspiration points, frame Sacred Cove with its sea caves, black sand, and rare plants.The adjacent parking area (a fee is charged at the entrance), multiple picnic tables, and restrooms are not in the Reserve, but add to the options for public enjoyment of the area.The Pre-Celts, Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians and the Romans were followed by the invasions of the Visigothic and the Suebi Germanic peoples.In 711 the Iberian Peninsula was invaded by the Moors and for the following centuries Portugal would be part of Muslim Al Andalus.Portugal was born as a result of the Christian Reconquista.
